In a coordinated effort with the group AZ Resist ALEC, Occupy Phoenix protesters moved to Scottsdale, Arizona on November 30th, 2011. A week of protests and marches are planned to expose the American Legislative Exchange Commissions connections to controversial laws like SB1070 in Arizona and the Wisconsin ACT 10.
ALEC came to Arizona for its “States and Nation Policy Summit”. Many feel that closed door sessions involving legislative policy discussions should be transparent and open to the public. Armed riot police used pepper spray to control the crowd and several arrests were made.
Occupy Phoenix media volunteer, Diane D’Angelo stated; “ALEC has subverted the democratic process by holding closed door meetings with legislators. Their crass manipulation benefits the 1%, with the rest of us left to pay the price.”
Protest events are scheduled through Decemeber 2nd, 2011 to coincide with the conclusion of ALEC’s policy summit.
